Old Master Drawings and Paintings Jan. 27 and Jan.  28
Old Masters seemed relatively recession proof in 2009, but this has always been a notoriously guarded market. This season Gordon Getty continues selling, with a pair of Canaletto drawings, each estimated in the $200-$350,000 range.

Pricier is 17th century Dutch painter Hendrick Goltzius’s 1612 “Jupiter and Antiope,” a racy R-rated composition featuring a monumental nude. It is estimated up to $12 million.  The painting formerly belonged to Abraham Adelsberger, a German Jewish toy manufacturer. Adelsberger’s son-in-law was forced to sell the work to Nazi Hermann Goring in exchange for the family’s safety, according to Sotheby’s. The painting was recovered by Allied forces in 1945 and sent to the Dutch government where it was loaned to museums. It was returned to the Adelsberger heirs in 2009.
