Photography gallery Hasted Hunt will relocate to the space formerly occupied by the Charles Cowles Gallery, a ground floor location on prime West 24th Street.

UPDATE: The gallery will take on a new name and partner as well. Joseph Kraeutler, formerly of Janet Borden, Charles Cowles and Phillips de Pury, is joining Hasted Hunt which will become Hasted Hunt Kraeutler.

Hasted, founded in 2005 by Sarah Hasted and Bill Hunt, had formerly operated from a third floor space at 529 West 20th Street.

Charles Cowles closed his gallery at the end of June after 30 years as a dealer.

Hasted seized the opportunity, taking over Cowles’ lease, according to co-founder Sarah Hasted. She said her rent won’t increase dramatically because Cowles’ space comes with an “old lease.”

“It’s a modest move for us monetarily, but we were happy to be in the right place at the right time,” she said.

Hasted Hunt will also take over exclusive representation of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky from Cowles, according to Hasted.

Landing Burtynsky is a coup for Hasted. Burtynsky, whose work is collected by major museums, would have had his pick of New York photography galleries.

Hasted re-opens at 537 West 24th Street on Oct. 6 with a show of 15 Burtynsky photographs from his Oil series, dating from 1997 to the present. This show coincides with an exhibition of Burtynsky’s Oil images at Washington D.C.’s Corcoran Gallery of Art running Oct. 3 to Dec. 13.

“It’s exciting and terrifying at the same time,” Hasted said of the move. “It’s a big risk all around.”
