Christie’s Photo Sales Tally $7.5 Million, As Penn Prices Soar
A series of four photo auctions this week at Christie’s totaled $7.5 million, spanning works by Sally Mann, Bruce Davidson and Edward S. Curtis.
Prints by Irving Penn, who died this week at the age of 92, performed especially well.
His 1948 “Cuzco Newsboy” fetched $72,100, above a $25,000 high estimate. The 1950 “Chimney Sweep, London” (printed in 1976) cruised over a $10,000 low estimate, selling for $74,500.
The J. Paul Getty Museum has a show of works from Penn’s “Small Trades” series, on view through Jan. 10.
