Art Toronto: Canadians Too Polite to Haggle

The 10th annual Art Toronto held Oct. 23-26 attracted 18,000 visitors, according to fair organizers. One hundred and one exhibitors from 12 countries–including just four from NYC– took part.
While I didn’t attend the fair, I called a couple dealers for reactions. The response was typical: some dealers sold well and others did poorly. The fair took place in Toronto’s convention center.
LIC contemporary dealer Mark Dean of Dean Project was thrilled to find collectors who didn’t ply him with low-ball offers.
“It was terrific to have collectors who weren’t looking for discounts at all,” says Dean. He reported five sales over $10,000 and says his Canadian buyers –mainly from Toronto and Montreal– even declined discounts or concessions when offered.
“That was refreshing,” says Dean. “They understood how much effort and time it is for dealers and artists.” He sold works by Reinaldo Sanguino and Sangbin Im.
Chelsea’s Mike Weiss Gallery reported $200,000 in sales for artists such as Allison Schulnik and Yigal Ozeri.
The fair is part of MMPI, which owns New York’s Armory, Art Chicago as well as VOLTA and NEXT.
